So what's happened since Connie's canon point in Steven Universe?

Connie, ever loyal to Crystal Gems, has been fighting alongside them since the Diamonds swore to finally bring the rogue gem Rose Quartz to justice. Steven, Connie's best friend and love interest, has never tired of attempting to bridge peace between gem and humanity, but gem kind has other ideas. So it has fallen to the Crystal gems and their allies to attempt to broker a peace and, if peace could not be found, keep the homeworld gems at a stalemate in their attempt to eradicate Earth from its history as a failed planet acquired for Homeworld.

It has not been an easy time, for anyone. Between discovering who Steven Universe actually is and realizing that the Cluster no longer was fulfilling its duty to destroy earth and act as a gem weapon, the Diamond authority attempts to send their soldiers to continue where they started years ago. The Crystal Gems have had to engage the homeworld gems as they have arrived, either defeating them and bubbling them away, or managing, usually with Steven's help, to persuade them in maintaining Earth's independent status.

During all of this, Connie has been training, reading, studying, learning more about the world around her as well as the gem history in front of her. She was unwilling to let Steven face the threat of a possible gem war without her and indeed he has never lacked his companion: the two of them have spent a lot of time together, hammering out treaties, talking on the phone, protecting each other on missions. They have become very close, and Connie has never forgotten that Steven was the boy who saved her several year ago from that falling rock and became the first fried he ever made.

So what about now? Steven has the opportunity of a lifetime: rather than having to deal with yet another gem entourage coming to Earth to be persuaded, Steven has been asked by factions on the gem homeworld to lead a new rebellion there, hoping to finally make the diamonds see the error of their ways and finally cease the fighting and the malicious feeling between them all. It was necessary for Steven to go, and so he has, with Lapis Lazuli and Peridot and Jasper, who had since been brought back to her humanoid gem form.

The Crystal gems stayed back on Earth should the Diamonds try to attack while Steven and the others were away. Connie would have dropped everything and gone with Steven...but he refused to let her go. It was one thing to fight on Earth, where any of the Crystal Gems could help, but Connie on Homeworld meant that any new sort of peril could kill her, and after what happened with Lars, Steven was unwilling to let Connie risk her short life on a mission like this. Connie protested, yelled, even cried, but Steven knew he could not budge on this. In the end, Garnet suggested the compromise: Connie stay back on Earth, but she be trained by the gems themselves, help with missions, even fight off gem mutants and gem monsters. Essentially, Connie would be taking Steven's place on the team while Steven created a new Crystal Gem faction on homeworld.

It was a manageable agreement, though Connie was still pained. By now she had begun to love Steven, and the idea of him being hurt permanently on homeworld was too much to bear. So she sees him when he visits from time to time, spending as much time as she can with him while maintaining her grade point average and her training. Sadly, it has been six months since she's seen Steven, but she holds out hope.

Currently, she is on her way to college, ANOTHER promise she made to her parents who still are concerned their only daughter might one day lose in her fighting with the Crystal Gems. So off she goes to Vassar, to study the humanities (and medicine, her mother hopes) while also keeping Rose's sword with her, tucked away in case she should need to join up with the Crystal Gems. Tall, strong and inquisitive, Connie is ready to deal with anything her strange life should throw at her!
